My FIrst Database ~ Where To Start?

Hi all,

I have never had problems setting up databases to run software like phpBB, PunBB, CubeCart, OSCommerce etc, but I am unsure about where to start for making my own site powered by a database.

I have some knowledge of both PHP and MySQL but only what I have learnt through chipping away at Open Source Projects.

I would like to make a VERY SIMPLE database which has the ability to search. Once I have learnt how to do the simple stuff I will pick up the rest easy enough, it's just taking the "first step" which seems to be rather confusing me.

Any help would be appreciated,
