Recommend reliable "free audio editor"

Is there any reliable "free audio editor" that someone could recommend?

I googled and found many but do not know which one to download.

I dare not attempt to download any freeware without recommendation from trusted source.
My PC was infected with serious TROJAN horse virus the previous time when I downloaded a freeware even though there were recommendation from people. And I had to fork out a hundred bucks to fix the problem.

I had asked the same question since I had an mp3 that I wanted to edit and I was given the same link. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Agreed, unless you're intending to compose music or edit MIDIs. For that I recommend RoseGarden.

Or Adobe Audition (which isn't free). I use that, and it works amazingly

But as I said, it isn't free, so I guess that's probably not an option.

I like Cool Edit Pro and Acid for that myself, although I don't do a lot (if any) any more so I don't know how well they still do compared to newer applications.
