i have an opinion on the wiki issue, and I'll tell you what it is.
I'd rather have the public opinion instead of a select few publishing a book.
If anyone can edit it, then the article will fall onto the most widely accepted position of everyone who reads it.
With a closed article, only a few people's opinions will be heard, with a greater chance of it being biased.

Sure, there are people who would replace the article on Adolph Hitler with

You <censored>Jew hating <censored> <censored> <censored>!!! the others people didn't deserve it either, you <censored> homophobic <censored>!

But these edits would be reversed, and as twey said, Prosecution would ensue.

The article is semi-protected: only editable by registered users. Contrast with fully protected, in which mode the article can be edited only by moderators.
