Hi - I have set up a site

I have worked out how to centre the site - but would really like the site to be a bit wider.

I know very little (but learning fast) about HTML stuff

I'de like to ask why you are making the site wider?

You are already forcing horizontal scroll in 800x600. Any wider and it's just going to make that issue worse. I generally keep fixed-width layouts to 770px, when I do them.
