Weird characters in the display of rss feed

When pulling google rss feeds with this script, sometimes I get weird characters in the display.

What do I need to change so it displays the characters correctly?

I see that too sometimes with, say, the feed for NYTimes.com. I haven't had time to investigate except to say the problem is happening on Simplepie's side (the server side script used by this script). When I tried displaying the feed directly using Simplepie, the strange characters remain.

You'll want to look at Simplepie's manual, especially the part dealing with encoding.
