CSS class all alone, no div, tr, table, td

I want ot make it so users can choose skins, but there is one class that I want to be defineable through the skin style sheet but I wnat to make it just the class and not in a div so that it doesn't look differnet, all I want it to do is change the font color depending on what they want in the skin.

I have tried just doing <class=""> and <span class=""> but none will change just the text color. please help
