You don't need it. If used properly, it will cause a small iconic image to appear in the address bar for a page or (depending upon how it is used) an entire site. However, in IE, the support for it is very poor. Perhaps this has been fixed in IE 7 but, I'm still waiting for live update to download and install it so, I can't be sure about that.

You don't need to. You could just download it here: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...XP-x86-enu.exe

What's you're hurry? I'm not in any hurry, and I certainly know I can get it whenever I need it. It might be recalled or even eventually skipped for the most part. Have you seen the beta 8 (just kidding)?

Mostly I am waiting because once I install it, it will be a pain to test in IE 6 as I will have to fire up another machine for that. Unless they have a 'stand-alone' version of 6 available already, anyone know anything about that? I'd be in a hurry to get that baby.

    Well, basically,

    1. I have a crappy internet. So, rather than Windows Updates installing at the most inconvenient time, I install it myself.

    2. I'm the system admin in my school so I have to install it on 400 other computers (running a batch file).

That doesn't really look all that useful to me because, once upgraded, I wouldn't want to be ripping at the registry over and over. It would have been real handy if I had been a beta tester. What I would be interested in would be a legacy 6 installation that can run even with 7 fully installed. Anyways, I went ahead and installed 7 and it looks pretty cool. I especially like that they used a method similar to Opera for zooming in and out of pages, makes all that concern over em's vs % vs px's pointless now except in FF and others, hopefully FF and others will get on board and realize that the whole page needs to resize proportionally or else it can be a problem and that the designer shouldn't need to be saddled with that responsibility. There are some problems I see already with sites I master but, they seem minor.

Oh, and I notice that the favicon support (getting back on topic here) seems very good in IE 7 but, as I said before, you don't really need a favicon.

The evolt browser archive has had a stand-alone IE6 for ages. Seems to work, though I haven't put it to real use yet as I only installed IE7 yesterday.

Hardly. There's still font size overrides to contend with, whether they be from user style sheets or minimum bounds imposed by the user agent. Opera, Firefox, and others feature the latter. IE probably could too using a user style sheet and CSS expressions - I hadn't really thought of that before.

Thanks Mike but, it has its limitations (just tested out this IE 6 'stand-alone'), it will still come in real handy. For important work though, I am glad I haven't upgraded to 7 on my older machine.

This bit about fonts and design. Once all browsers have a proper zooming function, those other considerations will be marginal and used mostly only by nerds.

However, as always in my work, I take into consideration accessibility by legacy and other user agents. It is an ongoing task. However, I think that the vast majority of designers will be relieved (if they ever even knew to be concerned about it) when all major modern browsers make this much more of a niche issue.

Well, I'm making a installer for IE6+IE7. It'll post it tommorrow.
