Help needed on Combo dropdown box with mouseover

Hi people - this is my first post so if I make mistakes please have patience.

I am trying to create a standard select dropdown box that on mouseover of any of the items will display a smallish text box, either fixed position that I can select or floating. I don't mind if the text box is a graphic, separate html or part of the code (preferable) - just as long as it works.

I am going round in circles with this combining bits of code from everywhere but not getting the apparently simple effect I am trying to produce.

Can anyone take me by the hand or nose (whatever it takes) and provide some simple code that I can plug in and amend as required to produce the effect?
