Submitting to Seach Engines

With my website published and online, it's desirable for others to visit. What inexpensive ways are available to submit a website to the search engines? What software (if any) do you web gurus use? Thanks.

Note: just submitting it won't do you a whole lot, since it will take a while for google to scan your site (or perhaps that's immediate, not sure), then it won't be on the top of any lists.
Google uses complex algorithms based on user hits and such, so your site will be ranked higher as it becomes more popular.
There's no way to fake the system, so the way to have a high ranking is just to make a great side, and, yes, wait...
