how to make an flv file better/smaller than H264 video?

Hi

I need to make a 1:30 video from DV to fit on the web - in a previous video, I used H264 and got a good quality 1:25 down to 3.9mb...now If I were to export this new video out of FCP 4.5 using the FLV codec, can I get a video of even better quality than H264 at an even lower file size? If so, what settings would you recommend in the flv option box?

I ask because I've tried the flv at 700kb per second, On2 VP6, keyframe at automatic, high quality, size at 400 x 300 and the quality did not look as good as the H264 and it was 8.8mb! (was hoping it would be about 3 mb or less.)

Not too big on the conversion thing with Flash, and I see you are using a Mac.. not a strong point for me either...

however, there are some good conversion sites out there, some even convert for free, and may have optimization tips..

Flash embeds video. It doesn't compress it better.
That's like embedding a movie into a webpage and hoping for lower filesize.

No. That won't help.

Filesize and quality are related to two things-- 1. codec (compressor/decompressor) and how good it is, and 2. bitrate which determines both size and quality, with one up as the other is down.

Anyway, if flash happened to give you another codec that was better, it would help, but i'd just stick to QT.

also, sorenson3 is the best codec in terms of compatibility. H.624 can't be seen by anyone without QT7. But it is better quality. Just depends on who you plan to show it to.

Thanks for the reply - yeah, QT 7 seems to work the best and our intended audience can easily update to QT 7 player, so will stay with that for a while.
