Graduated backgrounds using only CSS?

Hi there,

Does anyone know whether it is possible to make graduated backgrounds (say in a div) using CSS alone? I thought I read somewhere that it was possible, but I've surfed the net and don't seem to be able to find any reference to it! Am I just dreaming?

It's not possible without images insofar as I know.

Theoretically, you could generate an image using the PHP GD library, if it MUST be automated, but that won't save loading time or anything and adds a load to your server's processor.
...and it's likely more complex than you want.



(You cold also try flash or java, etc. But not worth it, most likely.)

Take a look at this URL:

Notice that "LIST" is bold black showing where you are on the vert nav menu.
As you click on the list of the vert menu, it stays bold black.

This is the effect I would like to achieve on my site and it doesn't have to be "pure css". I just need that type effect.

I am very much a CSS newbie, but I think what you want is something called breadcrumbs (a term used to describe hierarchical links that tell the visitor where he/she currently is on your site), have a look at the menu here on DD:

it might not be the answer, but it might give you some ideas.
