Server side programming. It allows you do to things on the server, like use databases and use files on the server.
It is very similar to php, I don't think any more powerful, maybe a little less even, and proprietary to Microsoft, where PHP is open source and free.
ASP also only runs on Windows servers.

Not quite true... Chillisoft developed an ASP Apache module. It's rather expensive, though, I believe.ASP also only runs on Windows servers.

Yes they did, and it works VERY well.. but it is rather pricey. I would pay for it, but I am still on shared hosting, and that is not up to me.
It's a shame though, as I have some wonderful ASP scripts for Flash that I want to use so bad and just can't...
Just like I can't bring myself to put my site on a Windows server...
