adding a catagory in mysql

same as the title.
i finished up with my photo gallery through some sources i found and have made some small tweaks. i am wondering though how do i add categories to my drop down menu. in the info i found it says to do it through a function. but that doesn't seam to work very well. any thoughts i can post the code if needed. thank you in advance.
