Problem with Firefox 18.0 that also existed with my previous (probably 17.something) version: I go through the steps to bookmark a page. The new bookmark then shows on my recently bookmarked page, but is not reflected in my unsorted bookmarks directory. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Not a problem here. Perhaps you had a bookmark folder open and it went in there. That happens in at least some if not all browsers. Say you're looking for a dentist. You do a search and find several promising leads. You can save them all to unsorted. But it makes more sense to create a bookmark folder named Dentists and save them all in there. Next time you go to save a bookmark, unless you climb back up to unsorted, it will go in the Dentists folder.
My unsorteds were a subfolder to something called bookmarks menu. I looked there and, voila.
