Required field(s) validation script fails in IE8

3) Describe problem: The alert message will not display in IE8. The script still prevents an empty form field from being submitted, but without the alert message, the user has no clue why the form won't submit.

This is a great little script, and we would love to keep using it, but we need some help solving this puzzle.
