Pulling Text From Database into RichText Editor

3) Describe problem: It seems like this has been asked many times but I haven't seen an actual answer that works. I'm using an SQL database and according to many answers in this forum this should work:

$article_txt is a variable that contains the text pulled from the database. However this doesn't work - the text-area doesn't show up. If I replace <?php echo $article_txt; ?> with text copy it works fine so obviously it doesn't like the PHP snippet.

Anyone have any answers? Thanks!
