how to retain layer style creations after resetting Photoshop tools

Good day to all.

I use Photoshop 6 for web graphics.

As one of the tool (Text tool) is not functioning properly, I need to reset all tools to see if it works after resetting just the Text Tool proves futile.

In the past, all the "Gradient Overlays" and "Pattern Overlays" that I have created over a period of time for "Layer Style" disappeared after I reset all tools.

I would appreciate if someone could advise on how to save the "Layer Style" creations and putting it back before and after resetting all tools.
