PHPBB RTE applet tutorial?

I created some software that uses a highly customized PHPBB formatting system (that is, I hand coded my own version of PHPBB because PHPBB didn't quite do what I needed it to do :p).

So now I am wondering if there is a tutorial on creating a Rich Text Editor applet for PHPBB. I don't know much about Java Applets-- only enough to understand the concept of them, really. Is there a tutorial that will help me create a customized PHPBB RTE? Or do you have other suggestions? This is by no means urgent-- I am simply trying to improve my software a little.

(I thought about trying to create one using JavaScript, but I don't think that JS is right for this kind of job.)
