FTP connection ?

For years I've been spoiled by access to many programs (such as Dreamweaver) through my connection to a college's computer labs.

Now that's ending. I have nothing and use public facilities such a the library.

Years ago I saw something about typing in ftp.sitename.com on Microsoft IE to gain access to site's files. Did that only work on Microsoft IE (which I don't have access to)?

I'm "web master" to several sites I'd like to tweak. Any suggestions would be appreciated (including what to search for). I have not yet asked server/host.

Of course, to do anything like you're talking about, you still need a username and password for the FTP connection. There are also a number of free and cheap programs you can get to do direct FTP from your computer. I use WS_FTP Pro, and really like it. It was free when I got it, but the newer versions have more features. Fireftp is another - an addon to Firefox, and I believe is free. There are likely many others both cheap and free, Google 'FTP programs'. But to answer your question more directly, I think most browsers still allow you to log on to FTP. But the problem there is that, even with a username and password, features are very limited.

thanks for your response.

as mentioned, i was spoiled by college's computer labs and an array of programs. sites have ID/password. using public facilities such as library does not allow me to download stuff. have not been able to get through to server/host to check out possible routes (e.g. cpanel).
