mp4 movie editing

Hi folks,I bought a Samsung camera a while ago and used it this past 4th of July.

I have barely used it before and inadvertantly recorded mp4 videos.

I would like to get photos if possible from these videos.I am not familar with any editing programs and would like some experienced person to help point me in the right direction
to software to do this.

Now I don't want to spend a lot of money because at this time I don't plan on having to do this often (I am going to have to read up on my camera manual -lol) to help me make sure I take photos when thats what I want and videos, only if thats what I want.

This isn't too hard.

The simplest option is to open it in any program and do a screen capture. On Windows, press "print screen" and then paste into any image program (eg, Paint, Photoshop, whatever).

A better option is to use a program that can save/copy a single frame, especially if you have HD video that is larger than your display resolution (because a screen capture is just the size of your screen). Video editing programs can certainly do this (Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, etc.), but they are overkill for this and expensive. There are a few free ones, but they're buggy and I can't specifically remember if they have a frame output option. You could check Windows Movie Maker or iMovie, but those might change the resolution of the video when you import it.

Anyway, the best answer is, I think, QuickTime. You should be able to just go to the frame you want and then copy that (CTRL+C) and paste into whatever.

One of the best (IMO) current and free software packages for all video conversion needs is Free Studio by Video Soft: http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/free-dvd-video-software.htm#.UdfoB_u9Kc0 (be mindful if you do the full install that it will also install a few addon tools/toolbars so you might want to select the custom install option to only install the actual program)

I also still have a soft spot for old-time video conversion tools TMPGEnc: http://www.tmpgenc.net/en/download.html and DVD2AVI: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_video/video_tools/dvd2avi.cfm / DGPMGDec: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/DGMPGDec, which you use to frameserve vob/mpeg2 (and probably also mpeg4) into TMPGEnc, and with that there is the option to convert a video sequence to a series of jpeg images.
