auto-complete combo-box without jquery

I'm wondering how to perform a combo-box with auto-completion...
It seems the trick is to use an input text box with a button...
All the code I found on google was about using jquery :/

Does someone have a simple working example to provide (without using jquery or additional external js files) ??
