The switch to linux

hey guys,
continuing on from this (http://www.dynamicdrive.com/forums/showthread.php?71462-Linux-distros) thread about linux distros, I am now thinking about actually switching to ubuntu 12.11. Basically the story is, I went out and got a macbook air, which leaves my older laptop free. As far as I'm concerned, I like ubuntu and mountain lion more than I like windows 8, and seeing how I'm still on the consumer preview of windows 8, and the ful version came out yesterday, it seems like a good time to upgrade. So my question is, should I switch to ubuntu? Or full windows 8?

You could do a dual os.Then you choose each time you turn on the laptop untill you decide which you want

Yeah, I don't really want to dualboot, It'd be quicker to have just ubuntu, or just windows.

It's good to have windows laying around. and dual-booting is not the pain you might think it is - just choose one to boot automatically.

so, install ubuntu, and then dualboot the latest version of windows?

on second thoughts, I might just run windows within a virtual machine or run windows 7 on dual boot, because I really don't like windows 8 anymore, it's given me quite a bit of trouble.

Alright, I'm now running Ubuntu, I'm gonna dual boot windows 7 probably.

I hadn't thought of the VM option. That might be a good option too, depending on how you plan to use it (since you were considering dropping it entirely, I assume it wouldn't be regular/heavy use).

Personally, I'd avoid using a virtual machine where-ever possible.
I'm running xp on a virtual machine on my laptop, and everytime I start it up, both it and my normal machine (Window 7) run ridiculously slowly.

Might not be a problem if you aren't planning to use it much though...

Yeah, I'm planning on dual booting windows 7 now.
