Just curious to what the rankings are on here, for instance
> 10 posts = noob
> 100 posts = beginner
That sort of thing

Hmm it's pretty much all here: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/forums/showthread.php?34180-New-usergroups-and-rankings-on-DD-forums-explained-%28July-8th-08-%29

The link given by DD Admin (closed thread now) contains questions and answers that relate to permissions etc. that you can get by virtue of your ranking. But the original question by FrickenTrevor was about ranking, not about permissions and the like.
I've seen more questions and remarks on DD about ranking. They seem to point towards a certain desire to be as close to the top as possible.
My personal view on the matter is that people shouldn't be concerned with their ranking (based on non-quality criteria) but on the quality of their contributions. We want to learn, and to hand over information we consider useful, not earn points, do(n't) we?
By this I don't mean to say that the original question isn't a normal one based on normal curiosity. I justed wanted to stress the fact that DD posts should not be sent because of ranking considerations. But of course, this is my personal view on the matter.

The "thanks" system was how everyone was ranked on the front page until the upgrade and now we have both post count and thanks. In terms of usergroups, it's always been post count. It would be interesting (in theory) to try to incorporate thanks into that as well. But I'm not sure how it would work.

I've basically ignored the usergroups. I always felt I had enough to do with the forum in general. Are any of them very active? Is the material in them unavailable unless you go specifically to view it?

Oh, that's a different kind of group. I've always generally ignored them (=the kind you're talking about), I think it's more just of a social "I'm part of X" thing than anything active. Molendijk and Trevor were talking about the user titles/groups based on status on the forum.
