How to create Triangle pointed div/navigation tabs

How would you create a triangle pointed div/navigation tabs. With background images, the :before :after? Maybe just purely css? Or are there other methods?

examples of what I am talking about:

The navigation tabs have those pointed triangles. One uses :before and the other one I think just background images.

Sorry for maybe using the wrong description of what I'm talking about, I don't know the terminology for that look.

Actually I think madnhate means to have triangles in the CSS menu
