That's my first online picture of myself. There are not very many pictures of myself. I don't mind having my picture taken, but I have little to no interest in having them. A cultural divide aswell as a gender divide - what's a girl to do? Maybe I should come with a disclaimer!? :)
For the benefit of those who do not know who Sid James is - He was the guy with the wrinkled face and dirty laugh in the British low budget "Carry On" films.
And if that needs further clarification... "Carry On" films (which ran from the 50s to 90s) are famed for their innuendo, saucy seaside humour, satirical wit and mocking of British institutions such as the National Health Service, monarchy, politicians, etc. And even though there is a fair amount of flesh shown at some point during the movies (more burlesque than stripper) they are still aired on Sunday afternoon TV for family viewing.

Slightly off topic, but what prompted you (referring to those who have posted in this thread) to post real life images of yourselves as your avatar? As you can see I decided to do so as well, but I was wondering if maybe there was a reason you originally decided to do so.
jscheuer1
09-25-2012, 02:23 AM
Well the avatar has a rich if perhaps brief, history. There are those who feel the best ones reflect as much as possible of the actual person. For some time though I had various ones that were not me. An animated .gif (be patient, it's slow):
4757
I also at various times used only one of the panels - a different one each at different times. And another I had was just an icon of a laptop:
4758
I've had at least two others, pictures of me though and not all that different from my current one. I may change again. For now I like what I have.

I like real pics because they're more personal and I think others tend to respond/interact in a more positive way with a real face attached to the post. Likewise, I am encouraged to deliver the best possible me as well - Of course, I reserve the right to be a complete irkish-goit-beast-from-hell to my nearest and dearest at least a few days every month, but I don't believe in dishing out the evils from behind my monitor.
james438
09-25-2012, 06:21 PM
That's a good point. They are rather personal and is a way to be more open about yourself to the people you interact with online. I think there should be a healthy balance between being open about yourself and protecting your privacy. I believe I have been erring a little too much on protecting my privacy due to all that I hear about identity thefts and whatnot.
jscheuer1, I remember that second one, but the first animated avatar you posted is a bit older for me. I may have seen it before, but I don't remember. I like your current one the best.

I used to have various other pictures, but for my last three avatars I've had pictures of me; the first was just taken with my webcam sitting at the computer, the second was a slightly better picture, and my current one is from my trip to Easter Island. I'll probably update it whenever I go on another trip and get a better picture.

At the risk of diverting the conversation still further from avatars I'll say that I am still looking forward to seeing The Power of Three episode :). Over here in the U.S. when growing up Doctor Who was something I always looked forward to. It only aired very late at night on Friday and could go on till 1am. It was the one day of the week I was allowed to stay up late and eat as much candy as I wanted! Friday night Doctor Who night was a big affair for my family. It was a very rare thing when I found someone else who had also heard of the show.
My favorite incarnation of the Doctor was #7 Sylvester McCoy. He was a very dark doctor or at least he dealt with some dark issues. His companion, Ace, was more like a daughter than the others and it was good to see the doctor as a father figure. There was also a version of the future version of the doctor that incarnation #6 met that was pure evil (incarnation number 13 or 14). He was interesting and rather scary. The evil Doctor considered the Master second rate!.
Ok, I'm done rambling for a bit ;).

Even more diverting from the thread, over here it airs on Sunday morning at 5:30AM (on abc iview, they air it a week late anyway, but they didn't have iview until this year, so people would just pirate the episodes, so they put it on iview right after it airs in England) keyboard and I got up at 5:00AM to watch it :p

I don't know about you, but I haven't seen my sister for some time. She's left coast I'm over her on the other one. We talk on the phone almost every week. Anyways, we exchange gifts for birthdays and holidays. She gave me that shirt and I really liked it and wanted her to see me in it. The avatar is just the head off of what turned out to be the best picture of about 5 or so. I waited until the light was right, near sunset, "God's light" as it's known by some. That's what I came up with.
What's your 'excuse'? :)
djr33
10-01-2012, 04:05 AM
Actually, there is an interesting story behind that photo (though nothing to do with the light). It was taken during my very short trip to Easter Island, a total of three days but two for traveling, so just one to see the whole island and take pictures-- not too hard, but certainly a full day (with a little bit on the other two days as well, after/before flights). I was happily taking pictures including this one, and my camera started acting up-- some of the photos didn't save, or were corrupted; ok, no big deal, just slowed me down a little bit taking the pictures. Then after 5 pictures after this one was taken the camera just completely corrupted the memory card. I'm still not sure what happened. But essentially everything appeared to have been wiped from the card and it was all lost. I couldn't figure it out and eventually gave up on the pictures-- I bought a (very overpriced) replacement and got a few more pictures on the way out the next day, but it was early morning and they weren't nearly as nice-- and this particularly part of the park wasn't open. I thought I'd lost all of the good pictures. And later that week I was mugged in Buenos Aires and the camera was taken; luckily most of my pictures were backed up on my computer (at the hotel), so I had those, although I lost the ones from that day in Colonia, Uruguay. Anyway, about a week passed until I got back to Ecuador where my better laptop was waiting and I eventually played with the card some more, actually taking it apart, cleaning it, putting it back together, trying a couple memory card readers, and eventually getting lucky-- I managed to copy the pictures off it. So now I saved all of these at least :)
I'm still not sure what happened with the card. Several of the pictures, more so toward the end, are completely corrupted, just essentially random JPG artifacts; sometimes half of the picture, sometimes the whole thing. And I liked that camera-- nice zoom lens-- I think I'll buy another one next time I get the impulse to go on a trip, perhaps to somewhere a little less likely to get mugged... oh... travels...
Overall, Easter Island was a really nice place-- I'd definitely recommend it if you ever get the chance (but of course it's right in the middle of the ocean, a 5 hour flight from anywhere, so... you may need to make a chance).
And yes, that is definitely the right light for your picture-- it's nice. (We were lucky enough to be at the cool part of the island with the near-sunset light-- also known as "Golden Hour", at least in the film industry, not sure about photography, even though it's often less than an hour.)

Mine doesn't have a story :)

Apart from the mugging, that's a really nice story

Just as a quick question, what kind of cameras do you use?
djr33

For these pictures in particular?
I'm more interested in video production than still photos-- for video work I use a Canon HV30, which is a great cheap HD camera (about $800 when I bought it around 6 years ago). I've generally liked Canon video cameras, although Sony can be ok too.
For photos while traveling I usually use a cheap camera. For a while, I used Kodak EasyShare cameras, which I thought were really good, considering they were pretty cheap-- about $150. I went through 2 (3?) of those a while ago. It's been about 2 years now.
After that, for the trip during which my avatar was taken, I decided to upgrade just a bit. Not a top of the line camera but something with better zoom and improved image quality-- now I just can't remember what it was. It was either Canon or Sony for $300, with 10x-16x zoom, a big improvement over the cheaper ones, and it took great pictures. Then it got stolen. (I should look up which one it was-- I've been thinking about buying another.)
After that, I just replaced it with a cheap on at a duty-free mall on the boarder of Argentina and Brazil... Nikon I think, nothing fancy.
I'd buy a nice bigger camera with a nice big lens if I liked to take pictures while not traveling, but for convenience and not having a fancy camera to be stolen I haven't done that yet.
As a random note, I really love these underwater cases for taking pictures while snorkeling, etc.:

Cheap and they work. But don't put an expensive camera in it of course. There's always a chance you'll get it wet with your hands or something.

sounds pretty good, I've got an olympus sz-10, it's a pretty god camera, considering the price, it cost me about $300 AUD, 1280x720 video, 18x optical zoom, which is pretty darn far for a little camera.

Hm, I've never tried Olympus. 18x zoom sounds good. I just look at the image quality (which I find often doesn't really correlate with price in an obvious way).

Very good quality photos and good if you're doing some shooting at a long distance.

Sounds good. What about low light pictures? That's what most of the cheap (~$150) cameras tend to miss.

"Trust no one."
"I want to believe."
Love David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
A very good show. But like almost all good shows, they did have their down moments, like the monster in the toilet episode for one.
but they also had their high moments, like the Simpsons episode for one.

I too like philosoraptor. I have a slight criticism though, It's so dark and small that it's hard to make out visually. If there were greater contrast between the background and the critter, it might be much easier to recognize. Might be hard to do and still have the superimposed text be as legible though. At first it looked to me like the head of a man grimacing. Although now that I know what it is (I Googled philosoraptor and saw it larger with not so much text on it), I can no longer see the grimacing man. It was sort of like:

Is it two faces, or a vase?
Something like that might make a neat avatar come to think of it.

How do you see two faces or two vases in that picture???
jscheuer1
10-16-2012, 08:51 PM
It's the outline of two white faces in profile looking at each other from the left and right sides of the image, or the outline of one black vase (looks more like a pedestal to me come to think of it) in the center.

Now make it coding related and you've got a very neat avatar!!!
