SEO ( or search engine optimization) is trying to get your website on the front pages of search engines. (google, Yahoo!), doing this through optimizing your website layout in order for it to be interpreted by the search engines or some such (I'm sure John will jump in here) a lot of websites advertise SEO, and how they can get your website on the frontage of google in a day, but I reccomend never going to any of those.

In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search,[1] news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.
