Just curious, but did my thread on bypassing a wireless router software attract spam that quickly or was it a preventative measure ;)?

I don't know, of course, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Precautionary. It was resolved anyway, and just the sort of thread that attracts spam. This one too, now. But I'll leave it open a little while longer if you want to discuss it a bit.

Not at all, feel free to lock this one. I just found it amusing that the thread was locked a couple hours after I posted the solution I found.

Threads attract spam at random times. It's, as far as I can tell, often based on search engine results. They search for topics (maybe something like "web design") and whatever posts come up first are where they post the spam. So specific topics that happen to be similar to spam topics start to get spam pretty quickly. Or sometimes 3-4 years later.
When we lock threads it's usually because spam has already arrived but also sometimes because (after the question is resolved of course) it's obviously going to eventually get some. It can be hard to monitor non-active threads because spam can sometimes be slipped in via edits to previously seemingly innocent posts.

(Of course if a topic is still for some reason unresolved or becomes relevant again, just PM a mod to re-open it. That's fine.)
