View Full Version : Ultimate Fade-in slideshownot working anymore in IE8

1) Script Title: Ultimate Fade-in slideshow (v2.4)

2) Script URL (on DD): http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex14/fadeinslideshow.htm

3) Describe problem: This script isn't working anymore in IE8 while it did work before. First I thought it was something in my own pages but opening http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex14/fadeinslideshow.htm in IE8 showed me it wasn't working there anymore either. Is there a solution for this?

Thanks in advance!

Sure. But we cannot tell for sure what that might be without seeing the page.

A common issue in IE 8 though is that when adding or changing the order of the images, a trailing comma is added to the last item in the imagearray. Technically this is an error. In reality only IE versions 8 and less break on it.

var mygallery=new fadeSlideShow({
wrapperid: "fadeshow1", //ID of blank DIV on page to house Slideshow
dimensions: [250, 180], //width/height of gallery in pixels. Should reflect dimensions of largest image
imagearray: [
["http://i26.tinypic.com/11l7ls0.jpg", "", "", "Nothing beats relaxing next to the pool when the weather is hot."],
["http://i29.tinypic.com/xp3hns.jpg", "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave", "_new", "Some day I'd like to explore these caves!"],
["http://i31.tinypic.com/119w28m.jpg"] //<--no trailing comma after very last image element!
displaymode: {type:'auto', pause:2500, cycles:0, wraparound:false},
persist: false, //remember last viewed slide and recall within same session?
fadeduration: 500, //transition duration (milliseconds)
descreveal: "ondemand",
togglerid: ""

Hello John,

But is that the case with the scripts on http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex14/fadeinslideshow.htm ?
It's not in mine: http://hoenderdoscomputertrainingen.nl . It's about the quotes in the right sidebar. This is a wordpress site but it is also not working anymore in 'normal' html sites where i use the script.

Thanks in advance,

right now it works fine in firefox end IE8. A potential problem could be that you have two instances of jQuery on the page. You could delete one of them and see if that helps.

Yes, works fine here in IE 8. What makes you think it doesn't?

Well I (and others.. ;-) don't see anything happening or just one image.
See also this one

There need to be a fading slide show on the left with differtent kind of photocameras.

And do you mean you can see the qoutes fading and changing on

On your own page also nothing happens, just black backgrounds there.

For all clairity: this is only in IE8 and only since shortly (before all was fine) not in FF nor in Chrome or Safari.
And it broke on all sites it's in and where nothing has been changed.

It really puzzles me...

Thanks again,

Yes it is strange. The slide show on the other site also works fine in IE8 (win vista). Fading between the different cameras. Did you try it from another pc ? Maybe your browser has an older script in the cache. Try to clear the cache and see if it helps

The camera one is OK-ish. Something happened the first time I loaded it up that may reveal a clue as to what's happening. Some of the images were missing. As these images are not outrageous in size and are there, I would have to guess it's the server or the network causing this. It happened in other browsers too, but other browsers are a little more graceful about missing images in this script.

Regardless of the browser, refreshing the page fixed this.

However, if the first image is perceived to be missing, IE will not start the slideshow at all. This may be what is happening.

So, my best guess, from what you're saying is that it's the server. Exactly what on the server, I don't know. Its hard drive might be dying, or it may just be experience high demand at times and timing out before it can find the images. Perhaps the timeout limit was recently changed and set too low. Or it could just be network traffic having little or nothing to do with the server itself.

As for it apparently happening more to you and your associates, perhaps you are testing more during peak demand times.

In any case, try refreshing the browser to see if that fixes it. Try a few times if need be.

As for the quotes, the link to them in your previous post is broken. But the one from your second post still works and still is OK here in IE 8.

We can modify the script so that in IE, even if the first image doesn't load, the show will still load, just with a red x where the image should be:

But it would be better to resolve the problem with the server - if that's what it is and if that's possible. Otherwise images will go missing in all browsers at times, and because it may be a symptom of something more serious for the server.

hello John,
Thanks for thinking with me. But I still don't understand it. All sites (here is a nother one: www.ardispark.nl, tree on the right side below) are running on different servers and did all wel till a few weeks ago. And as for broken images, I didn't change anything in them and then that would be the case also on http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex14/fadeinslideshow.htm because your own images i can't see anymore either. I'm still using windows xp but I checked and it's not visible either in windows 7.

This is the errorreport when clicking on it in the below statusbar:

(sorry it's in Dutch but I quess you understand)

Hope you can still help...

Well, what I said still holds true. But it wouldn't cause what you're reporting. And it may primarily be a result of how far away I am from the server for that particular site. I only detected it for that one site (the camera one), and in all browsers. It doesn't mean that you changed anything, rather that the server and my computer aren't communicating as effectively as one would hope.

What you're reporting, an error in:

I'm just not getting that, and the slideshow on the Dynamic Drive demo page as well as on ardispark.nl work fine here in Win XP IE 8. In fact all of them so far, including the camera one work OK, just that without a refresh or two, the camera one can sometimes have missing images.

Furthermore, in neither Firefox nor IE 8 is there such a script associated with those pages. This leads me to believe that it's a third party addon, see:

or possibly a misuse of that service or just some script with that address by a virus or a trojan on your computer.

Do you make use of Amazon's CloudFront in any way?

In any case, I think it's your browser. Try disabling all addons.

Hello John,
Here's un update on the problem: It was some kind of virus, trojan or whatever, can't repruduce it here cause removing it caused that I could not start up my pc anymore not even after a total windows xp repair. So in the end it became a complete new windows xp pro set up. Took hours and hours to get all I used back. Most enoying thing is that I didn't even noticed the problem till I opened up the sites in IE8 (wich I only do when finishing a site to check it there)...
Now it's all oke again.

I wanted to comment that the footsteps of John, I could run the script from Ultimate Fade-in slideshow (v2.4) without problems. remove the "," and the array of images in the Internet Explorer browser with compatibility view, the script worked.
I'm happy. John thank you very much for the help. Greetings from Argentina.
