Hi there,

I am developing some templates which I am going to be reselling. I wanted to ask if I am allowed to use DD scripts in my templates? I will of course keep the copyright noticed in tact.

Thanks

It's a little hard to answer that question without knowing details.

The policy is that you can use the DD scripts even in commercial projects. However, the keyword is "in". You cannot redistribute DD scripts as separate entities, especially for money. In other words, your work must be a significant portion of the end project, and you cannot distribute a minimal "shell" around a DD script and call it your own.

If your use of the DD scripts is in good faith and you do keep the copyright, then it should be ok.

Here are some suggestions:
1. Link back to DD and make a note on your page. (But not in a way that makes is sound like your work is directly affiliated with DD.)
2. Make it clear to your end users that the copyright notice must stay in tact. The use of the scripts is always licensed by displaying that copyright, and if the end users remove it they will be violating the agreement, and if enough do so then it may reflect back on you.
3. If you plan to do this a significant amount, then asking/informing ddadmin is always a good idea.

As an unrelated note, you could always link to DD and tell the users to install a certain script. I know that isn't the easiest way to use a template, but if there's a case where you don't intend to modify a script, linking to this website is of course allowed.

I second that (the "ask ddadmin" part).

Dan directed me to ddadmin in the past and he/she was very helpful.

ps - didnt recognise you there for a mo Daniel - your new pic is much improved on your previous one.

I must say, we've had quite a few more faces revealed in recent avatar changes and its so nice to see everyone "face-to-face" :) It makes the whole environment much more friendly, dont you agree? (you dont have to agree at all but I thought it was worth mentioning)

Yes, I agree. And yes, I thought it was time for a new image.

I didn't mention this above, but ddadmin is always open to discussion of exceptions for legitimate reasons. I'm not sure that this question necessary falls in that category (since it's a fairly standard business operation), but exceptions have been made in the past for circumstances that seem fair. And more than anything, the fact that you are asking means a lot more than the sort of person who would just take the scripts and do what they want without asking.
