I would get a book on php, go to your local library and check some out, you don't have to buy if you don't want to; study other poeples code, a good place to study is a forums, I have several that I visit programmingtalk.com (http://programmingtalk.com), PHP Null (http://phpnull.com), webhostingtalk.com (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/) and dynamicdrive; study tutorials, search dogpile.com (http://www.dogpile.com/info.dogpl/search/web/php%2Btutorials) , and I would also become best friends with php.net. Also what I found helped me the most is to create php script and mess around with the language. Hope this help you!

You're welcome :)
If you're looking for a book for the reasonably clueless, I suggest "PHP In Easy Steps" by Mike McGrath, published by Computer Step. For a free tutorial, see http://www.w3schools.com/php/default.asp.
