How to create 3D Effect in Photoshop or Illustrator

I am trying to figure out how to create a 3D sphere effect of a image. If you check out the link you will see how the money sphere has the 3D look. I actually found this image from a photo website. Is there a way this can be done in photoshop or illustrator using a two dimensional image? Thanks
