View Full Version : Moving a DIV in javascript (with a smooth animation)

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to move a DIV in JavaScript with a smooth animation because I have no idea where to start.

I've seen hundreds of code examples but none fit my needs. You see, I need the DIV to move EXACTLY where I want it. I need to be able to give it x & y coordinates with an absolute position on the page instead of just telling the DIV layer to move 5 pixels right or 5 pixels down.

Is this possible? :)

Hi Im new to jQuery but I tried to make this silly little animation

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>Untitled Document</title>
<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery-1.4.2.min.js"></script>
<style type="text/css">
#movediv {
width:200px;
height:100px;
background-color: #BADEEF;
padding:20px;
margin-top:100px;
margin-left:100px;
cursor:pointer;
}
</style>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
$('#movediv').click(function() {
$(this).animate({
marginLeft: '500px',
marginTop: '200px'
}, 2000, function() {
$(this).append('<div>Ah - Thanks, it is much better over here!</div>');
});
});
});
</script>
</head>
<body>
<div id="movediv"><h2>Click to move me !</h2>
</div>
</body>
</html>
Don't know if it's of any use to you, but here is a DEMO (http://azoomer.com/movediv.html)

// The script is initialised by assigning an instance of the script to a variable.

// A = the global referencing the script instance. (variable)
// parameter 0 = the start value. (digits, for opacity minimum 0, maximum 100)
