Refresh after hiding a frame

Ok, I know I shouldn't be using frames but unfortunately I am.

I've got a nav frame, a header frame and main frame.

I've written some javascript to toggle the left frame on and off by setting the cols attribute to 0 and back again. That works great.

However when the button is clicked and the left frame dissapears or appears the main frame always reloads/refreshes. Is there anyway to stop this happening.
