Load images only on hover

I am using the below css on my webpage where I have 50+ links which pops up different large size image.

It loads all images at the time of pageload. I want it to load only on hover. I know after it may take sometime to popup when loading image after hover but the images are really large size, which slows down the whole system.

I don't see how you can do this with just CSS. If you want it to load external files you're going to need one of the modal or lightbox type scripts that allow you to summon items
