jQuery Multi Level CSS Menu #2

I'm working on creating a menu using simliar code to the jQuery Multi Level CSS Menu #2. I was wondering how hard it would be to add an image background instead of a solid color. I tried using the background: url but when I do that it comes out invisable. I'm wondering if it has to do with set height of the images or not. Any suggestions?
