Suggested wiki package?

I'm debating about trying to code a site myself (I will be, anyway, for most of it) or using a prebuilt wiki for user content.

Does anyone have any experience with a simple (layout, nothing more complex than wikipedia, hopefully less) and easy to use (and integrate?) wiki setup?

I've experimented with MediaWiki (htp://mediawiki.org) and DokuWiki (http://www.dokuwiki.org)... I'd have to say that MediaWiki is by far the most advanced, and best, wiki software I've used. It's a bit of a trek to get it set up, but once you get it set up it is a wonderful tool.

It took me a few tries to finally get Mediawiki up and running - only because on my free hosting, they disable a bunch of stuff that MediaWiki uses, so I had to hack a bunch of stuff, but I eventually got it working (http://x96-panel.99k.org/wiki/).

I don't really like DokuWiki - it didn't work on my free host, and had many defects, but it is easier to set up because it uses text files to store data instead of MySQL tables. The one thing that bugged me, is that you can't disable the caching, at that was screwing up the entire install on my free web host.

I'd recommend a self-coded site, wiki's aren't really meant for that kind of stuff, but hey - it's your site! ;)

Thanks for the info.

I don't intend to built the entire site around this, just the part that will be open for public submission, revision, etc.

I'm not certain about using a wiki because I want a large portion of the site to be user-editable, so that might make it difficult to use a wiki for all of it (but likely just as difficult to code the entire thing myself).

I think I'll look into mediawiki and see where that goes.
