Smooth Navigational Menu (v1.3) Problem

3) Describe problem:

I can get the script to work if I use the navigation code on the page, however; when I try to use an external file it doesn't work at all. I need to use the external file because I am working on a rather large site and need to be able to edit only one page.
I am thinking it has something to do with the

<div id="smoothmenu1" class="ddsmoothmenu">

element on the smoothmenu2.htm

I am sure it is something really dumb that I just don't see.
