i uploaded an .htaccess to the root with this in it

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.visalrecords.com/home.html

basically, i want anything that would result in a 404 to be sent to the home page. it does not work

Hmmm that should work. I use the exact same code to perform the same thing on another site. Are you sure your web host supports .htaccess files?
