PHP Form - Need selection from child to update parent

I have a php registration form. I have been asked to 'on click' popup or open another window with links or checkboxes which when selected closes the popup window and updates a form field with the selection from the popup. I don't even know what to search for. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.
