eXtensionable Markup Language

What do you do with it? I know it stores data. But, how do you use that data? How do you view that data? Why would you need that data? What is the difference in saving that data as XML, rather than variables in javascript or html or php or any other scripting language?

Any examples woould be appreciated.

:confused:

XML is a structured data-storage format, which makes it easier and faster for programs to retrieve the data. XML is persistant storage - that is, it doesn't go away when the program exits, as a variable does. The way the data is used/viewed depends entirely on the program that parses it. Think of it as HTML - but YOU write the browser: YOU, not a doctype, define what each tag means, how it's displayed (if it's displayed), what to do with the data inside it.

A more thorough explanation is available on http://www.xml.com/.

ok, so lets say in xml:

<letter>
<to>Bob</to>
<from>Sally</from>
<body>blah blah blah</body>
<date>Monday, the 1st of August</date>
</letter>

how could I use this in an html document?
