Should I Blog?

Does anyone know how effective blogs are at driving visitors to a website? I've got a couple of site that are funded through advertising and wonder if blogging would be an effective way of generating more visitors as well has keeping content as fresh as possible.

Does anyone have any experience of blogs and are the very time consuming to maintain?

I have no experience blogging but, it is self evident to me that a good one takes frequent upkeep, if only to add entries. Seems a bit like keeping a diary. Something you should do if you are motivated to do so for its own sake. Otherwise, it would be hard to keep at it.
