switching webpage layout to narrow /wide

Hi

good day to all,

i need help on how to switch the web page layout narrow / wide as if we can see in yahoo main page.

I noticed on click event the webpage file name itself changes.
But when we see in some opensource cms like mambo and joomla we can see a layout change options in which it changes without opening any new page.

any ideas is appreciated.
