I'm trying to get all my data off my PC, so I can reformat the computer and give it to my folks. The problem is that the one PC won't broadcast, even though it picks up the network. My macs can see each other, and can see the PC over the router, but can't access any of the drives. Any suggestions?

You will need to add the mac to the windows network. here is a great how to (http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3751211)

The PC is an HP zd8000. I've tried the network thing three different ways: 1) set up my own home network through PC--unfortunately, none of the macs can see it this way, 2) set up a network from my mac--when PC tries to add the location \\192.168.x.x\Macbook, it says the location is invalid, even though the macbook's address is set up to share files (I even ... Read Moretried using FTP, and it wouldn't work), 3) tried to share my PC shared folder and personal folders, but since the zd8000 seems not to be broadcasting, the folders never show up on the network (none of the folders are private). It's kind of funny, because when I stick in the other HD for the zd8000, everything worked fine, and I took all the files I needed directly through the network. I suppose I could burn all the stuff to disc and transfer it that way, but there's a lot of information: music, pictures, movies, comics, documents that needs to be transferred--that's why I prefer the network approach: simply copy all files and walk away.

Any suggestions?

Not that familiar with macs, so my help will be limited. I do know that for Windows to work the network name need to be the same as the others. The default is HOME. Could be the issue? I am not sure.

If you have webspace you could always FTP the stuff to a server.

I will keep looking for another more viable answer to the problem though.

He already tried FTPing but that wouldn't work. He said MAC won't hook up to the Windows network and that's the problem.

Found this (http://lifehacker.com/software/networking/connect-your-mac-to-a-windows-network-211108.php) list of tips and tutorials. Ever thought of firewire direct transfer?

I will keep looking...

Which versions of Mac and Windows are you using? I am assuming OS X and XP...

Blizzard: Network name cannot be seen on network. The only way to see all computers is by looking at them through the router. However, the Mac can't see the PC and the PC can't see the Mac. I've used the name: Home, Network, my network, etc. None of these work because the network is not being established through the router. However, the funny thing is that both the Mac and PC is getting full internet service. Mac won't detect/read that the PC exists on network. Mac OS 10.5 is compatible with XP, and was working for one of the Hard Drives. File sharing is enabled on Mac, PC has folders set to share mode. But Mac cannot see the PC, the network set up by the PC, or anything else about the PC. When I installed the old hard drive, the PC just popped up on the network, and the Mac took all the files from it. That's what makes me think the new PC hard drive is not broadcasting somehow (even though it can connect to the internet).

He's using Mac OS 10.5.5 and Windows XP (SP 3).

Interesting. I really wish I could be more help, like a "oh, here is what you do" post, but I really can't. I am going through my TCP/IP and networking books as we speak...
