Javascript interaction with Quicktime is very limited; I think there are some options, but can't remember the details. You can, however, script within quicktime, actually, and it is powerful, if a bit difficult to figure out (not very accessible). There are some documents on the apple website, though, and also plenty of info (if not complete) through google.
"quicktime javascript" and "quicktime programming", etc., would be a good place to start.
I have just seen of these options, not actually used them, so I'm not really sure.
However:
1. It would be easier-- just cut the video down. Lots of ways to do that.
2. You could alternatively try embedding/playing through flash, if that fits.
thanks for your reply. That would work perfectly, however, i have to have the video on the home page, and on another page, in the home page, i want to play only the last 20 mins, and on te other one, i want to play all of it. due to the large files it creates, i dont want to have two separe videos... so there's no way at all to do this?

Honestly, that's just not a good enough reason not to put them both up.
I'd just put up two copies. Realize, the bandwidth, not the space, is usually what runs out.
I guess you could just play two videos on the front page.
thanks for your help, but i just found
this article on apple's website (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/embed2.html)
Hope its of help for others.
