View Full Version : White box in Safari

I have created a basic website in Dreamweaver. I have a page with a flash window and some text contained within a table. Now when I go to the page, it is fine. When I click reload, a white box shows up underneath the table and extends down to the bottom of the page. It only does this sporadically, and it only does it in safari. Firefox and IE are fine...
Does anyone know ho to get rid of the box, or what it is?
All my pages without flash are set up the same way, but I don't have this problem on them.

Please post a link to your site so we can observe and better diagnose the problem.

Click on Interactive Music Simulator
When you reload it, sometimes it makes the white box(s) that I am talking about.

I am unable to duplicate the described behavior in Safari (Win) v 3.0.3.

I think i see the box your referring to i'm on a mac in safari. Its below the 123 links? If that is it I'd say it has something to do with your frames because this page http://www.cilley360.com/Pages/Portfolio/Simulator_Proposal.htm and the list page both display properly alone and the white box appears on the initial load on the frames page only. I'd try using css in place of the frames.

zI am an amateur when it comes to HTML. That's why I use Dreamweaver. Is there any way to fix this without using CSS?

Not sure if this will work or not make a new html page and call it test.html put it in the same directory and put this in it.This should display as you had it without frames if it works and the white box is gone then keep the top half right AND go down to where it says <!--PUT NEW HTML IN HERE--> put in the code from each right page into that part. Also you'll have to take out the targets and relink each link.

bluewalrus, I tried what you suggested. The first part worked. When I clicked refresh, there was no box. However, I am confused about where to put the code from each right page.
There was no, "<!--PUT NEW HTML IN HERE-->" in your code.
The closest I found was:
<!--
function MM_preloadImages() { //v3.0
var d=document; if(d.images){ if(!d.MM_p) d.MM_p=new Array();
var i,j=d.MM_p.length,a=MM_preloadImages.arguments; for(i=0; i<a.length; i++)
if (a[i].indexOf("#")!=0){ d.MM_p[j]=new Image; d.MM_p[j++].src=a[i];}}
}
//-->
Can you please clarify what to paste, and where to paste it?
Thank you, and I appreciate your time and assistance.

oo yea sorry about that forgot to add it in it goes in after this
</div>
<div style="float:left; width:750px;">
DELETE EVERYTHING IN HERE This is the second div though make sure it is 750px wide or just run a search in dreamweaver (make sure its checking source code) for "
</div>
<div style="float:left; width:750px;">".
.....if your in Firefox click your first link it'll load in the right side frame. click on it, and then right click or control click, then click "this frame" , then click "view this frame source". copy from right under the <body>to </body> and paste in in here/there. Your css i'm assuming here was/is the same for all of these pages and that you did not declare any java or additional css sheets in the head of these docs. But if you did just copy the link for them out of the head and put it into the new corresponding pages head (<head> it ends at </head>
but leave everything below this cause this because that closes the div body and html
</div>
</body>
</html>
Make sure to take out your targets and link the pages correctly.

bluewalrus,
I think I am just too much of a rookie for this. I am totally lost at this point. I cannot figure out how to make this work properly. I know little/nothing about HTML.
I will probably just leave it the way it is, unless there is some other, more simplified way of making this work.
Thanks for your help.

you know how your left menu is working corresponding with your right side of the page right?
If not quick explanation:
You click that link and it loads that page on the right side. That right side has the code contained in it. Its 2 separate pages right now sharing 1 window. You want to make it 1 uniformed page with that same code which is what my code does. You right side had a window name that is what the target says to load into that window but since you not loading into that window you not going to be targeting that so you can delete that target path and link directly to the other page. IE.....

Now you see this will currently only load the right side of the page but now you will need to add that code put above so that the left menu will show up. Basically you shouldn't give up here. Make a testing page and show me what your doing wrong of this isnt clear and link it and i'll send you what you did wrong and how to fix it and get others to work.

bluewalrus,
I think I figured out what is causing this problem, but I could still use your help. I had an old website that I created from Dreamweaver MX. I never had the white box problem with that site. The current one that I am having trouble with was re-created in Dreamweaver CS3.
Now, When I open the old file (MX) in CS3, I get a warning. When I click "No" The white boxes don't show up. If I click "Yes," to convert the tags, I end up with the white boxes.
I attached a screenshot of the warning box as well as the window I get when I click preferences.
I have also put up the properly working (MX) link on my website, so you can see the code.
Is there a simple box I can check in the preferences to fix this?
Is there a difference in the two codes that can easily fix this?
If I choose not to convert the tags, will it not work in the newest Internet Explorer?
Thanks.

looks like you fixed it too me in safari its not showing up on my comp. But maybe ie i cant test it here. This is the code i've been using to display flash videos so it validates with W3

You should be using SWFObject 2.0 (http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/) for embedding Flash objects. It's the de facto standard for that sort of thing. Adobe is using it in the CS4 release.

cs4 is out?
lol...yup. It's all a part of Adobe's botched release. They didn't set a release date at their CS4 launch event. Then, they launched CS4 without putting the trial software on the site.

Bluewalrus, and Medyman,
Thank you so much for your help. It looks as though Medyman has the best solution to the problem though. This is why I am an amateur. It was as simple as downloading the newest version of Flash player.
Do either of you have the newest Internet explorer?
I really want to test it on that, but can't, for I am on a mac.

By newest do you mean IE7 or the IE8 beta? I use a Mac too but we have test machines which every common configuration you can think of.
If you're using SWFObject, it'll work.
