i'm trying to place a favicon for my site. with firefox and netscape it works fine. as for internet explorer, it doesn't show at all. i've tried reloading the site and deleted my cache. i've added the site into my favorites and it still doesnt show.
i've put the tag <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico"> in the <head> portion and it still doesn't work. any ideas?

Favicon and IE are a poor match. Hopefully, this will be addressed in the next release of IE. Sometimes you can coax IE into displaying the favicon by gently tugging at the default icon in the address bar using a drag and drop motion. Even once you get IE to display the favicon, it is likely to stop doing so at any time without notice.
Try
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon"/>
<link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon"/>

Getting a free TLD (.co.uk, .net, .com, etc.) with no catch is nigh on impossible - however you can get a redirector from somewhere like www.r8.org which will give you a redirect to your site from somewhere like http://xxx.r8.org.
Anyway, even if you did get the TLD, you wouldn't get advert-free hosting with nameservers, etc. I have www.cr3ation.co.uk because I got the TLD on offer (£6 GBP for 2 years, nice and cheap), and the hosting is free as I know some nice blokes from ByteForge hosting who hooked me up with some.
Good luck,

For anyone without cr3's connections, try http://www.dot.tk/ :p
/EDIT: No! Don't do it! Use http://www.freedomain.co.nr/!

Ack! No! I despise the adverted spawn of Satan that is dot.tk - use www.r8.org instead. No adverts.
Just my two cents.

Yes, I know, but dot.tk is the only one I know that offers a TLD rather than a subdomain.

That reminds me, http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ are still running, and I don't believe they have adverts.
For anyone without cr3's connections, try <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">http://www.dot.tk/</span> http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ :p
I stand corrected.
What, no strikethrough bbcode?
