View Full Version : DD code of summer?

I got just an idea when i combined two sites together. I listened to some podcasts on www.ecca-london.org and found some pretty good information there. For artist out there definetely a good source. And I strolled through the list of the summer of code (soc). Now, the idea is simple: what if some of us team up (collaborative working) and compete against eachother. We need to bring forward a project in every category listed on DD. The winners get of course the glory of being the best and a super duber new icon.
Any thoughts on this?

I think it's a pretty neat idea.

Hmm... I guess its ok, but will the scripts be added to the dynamicdrive lib?

ah, good point. I think that should be a "must". All finished products should be added into the DD library.

I think they should be offered/posted at least I don't know if they must be added.

It really depends on the script. If it has mass appeal, is well written, is easy to implement, etc... then I'm sure ddadmin would consider it. You have to realize the scripts are designed to be plug-and-play.

I'd love to do this kind of thing but for something a little more complicated, perhaps. It need not be featured on DD. There are other venues for useful scripts/applications.

If you guys are serious about doing this, I urge you to go forward. Let me know if you need any design/front-end help.

Rather than new scripts, couldn't we have an organised effort to clean up the scripts already there? I tried to organise something to that effect a few months ago, but there was little enthusiasm. Most of the DD codebase is, frankly, embarrassing.

I agree with you Twey.

I won't say I disagree, but I always hated it when I had to clean up and do documenting for someone else. I have some ideas to what rules/level the scripts and teams must apply. First I have to see if there is any interest in this.

To get some more momentum I put down some ideas/questions which needs to be considered:

Number of team members
Start and end period of contest
Applications online and/or off-line
30 seconds explanation of working projects
Voting system
combining some categories or all standalone

There need to be more ideas to get this thing concrete so proposals are more than welcome.

totally agreed. I think scripts that are no longer relevant, or have been superseded (eg scripts written for IE4) should be removed or at least updated, and those which we find okay, update them so they are properly coded.

What I think you should do to organize, if you didn't try this. Is to get all the scripts that are good, and then take out the ones that you didn't put down as good or something like that. :D

Perhaps we should see what the present DD library have. If they can still be used, then we just leave it as it is. For those that we think is past is expiry date, either we delete them or modify them if possible. Once we are done with the bookkeeping, we should have an clearer picture what new stuffs we might want to put in the library. Personally, i think there should be some similar stuffs out in the library.

The idea is twofold; collaborative working and compete against each other resulting in good scripts/applications. I know of other venues, but I thought having a community here it would will be easier to get people to join in. my idea seems not as good as I thought it was as the tendency is for cleaning up code.

No, there's nothing intrinsically wrong with your idea, but we mustn't neglect the existing codebase in the name of progress.

I think we can close this thread now. Not because of the issue with the existing code. It isn't an issue at all, because it can easily fit in the contest. I don't think it is going to happen because not enough people are coming forward to work together. That part is for me far more important than the codebase because that is solvable.

I just now saw this, and only because I happened to post here and got curious. The original idea sounds fun, and the other sounds responsible... Maybe we could do both?

And maybe this should be more prominent?
