There are some obscure/creative/interesting usernames out there, and I thought it would be interesting to know where they came from...

Tell your story here!

I've used this for maybe 9 years now, or some variation (djr33 is my choice, with variations chosen based on availability or limitations on patterns).
It's not complex, though seems to confuse people-- it's my initials followed by a favorite number. That's it :)
(Nope... not a junior, or a doctor, or anything in between... ha :))

Nothing fancy with my username :)

...I used this username just recently last January as I decided to indulge myself into public forums ;)

...Just a combination of my initial name and surname...nothing creepy whatsoever :)

Medyman
05-13-2008, 11:22 PM
From when I was fairly young (4 or 5) till a few months ago, I've sought out a career in medicine (just changed my mind in lieu of bigger and better things). Medyman comes from my middle school interpretation of that. A variation of it was my first screenname on AIM. I haven't really used it since but something when registering on this forum made me revive it.

Nowadays, on other design-related forums, I use a username much more meaningful -- my web design company's name (I spare you guys the shameless plug).

Twilightrose917
05-18-2008, 09:25 PM
On mine, the first part - 'twilight' - originally came from the book by Stephanie Meyer of that name, though I also just liked it as a nickname. I'm not quite sure when I started to add 'rose' to it, although I think it was because someone had already taken 'twilight' as a username on something I was signing up for. Recently I also named a company I am working on setting up "Twilight Rose Design" ... I hope it works out, but I haven't finished it yet. "917" is for my birthday - September 17th. But that's basically it. :)

fileserverdirect
05-18-2008, 09:50 PM
I made it back in 2006, I had a code problem in CGI on a website that was called File Server Direct. I thought I just had a simple question. No one answered my first post. I was discouraged and did not post untill mid-2007. Now I check DD almost every day -- answering posts, asking Q's etc. So basicly this account was going to be used as an account for my website. BTW File Server Direct never went online :(... And it was the first website that I designed.

:)

I don't like to complicate things, so my username=my surname.
As for my password, try to hack it. It has something to do with my initial name.
100 euro's for the person who hacks it. That's a lot in the USA these days.

Great idea for a thread :)

As for my username, it's the first three letters of my name. It's also what my parents call me. I know, I'm really original, huh? :D

Molendijk: I don't want to get banned from DD for attempting to hack in :p

boogyman
05-19-2008, 12:35 PM
my original name here was
pissa, named after a river in russia.

this name is really the "alias" that people know me as in the online community. It was originally created because I like to listen to music "boogy" and I am a guy "man", although these days many people confuse it's meaning with boogEyman, aka the scarey closet monster

djr33
05-19-2008, 12:41 PM
That's hilarious. I never noticed the spelling inconsistency.

boogyman
05-19-2008, 02:14 PM
people never really made jokes about the misinterpretation until like two years ago, which is interesting for me since I have used this name for the better part of a decade

What about booger (definition 2 from m-w.com) jokes?

boogyman
05-19-2008, 02:58 PM
just did some reference about "booger", and the correct spelling for the "closet monster" is bogeyman or bogyman, with only 1 o LOL.

When I first made the id, I got a couple of those, but recently no, I haven't. So I suppose the joke surrounding the name evolved from nostril mucus to closet monster

Yes, but DD no doubt tracks failed login attempts. So, whether you announce it to the world or not, the DD admins would figure it out eventually.

Rockonmetal
06-06-2008, 01:50 AM
Basically it was the first image that popped in my head... Literally a small rock on a piece of metal... lol... it was that or I just didn't want to have to put all my favorite bands in a screen name... *it would be inappropriate too! :D* But i think it was the image... how random??? no wonder i can't pay attention in school :p jk...

Minos

Msn hacker? I thought you were just very fond of ham :(

Minos-

Mi"nos\, n. [Gr. ?.] (Class. Myth.) Son of Zeus and Europa; king of ancient Crete; ordered Daedalus to build the labyrinth to house the Minotaur; after death Minos became a judge in the underworld.

dangero

Mine was given to me from the first server log-in I had the nick name of dangerous because I was bit of a nutter at work and job that contained a risk or was unsafe I was there getting the job done. So when I signed up to my first server the ask for a log-in and I gave the name of dangerous but they came back with Dangero which has stuck with me for about 8 years now

I thought it was:

Jedi disciple (Star Wars)

My mistake.

So, do you believe in the talking snake? Just curious.

Firstly, I wish people would more easily get past differing beliefs to the people who hold them. Without getting into a debate, I'm sure your own beliefs could be similarly mocked.

I believe the story is true in some sense; certain aspects of it seem to indicate that it's abstract and others that it's literal. It's something I would like to discuss with others if only the Church were more open to discussion in a physical setting (as purely textual conversation seems to cause problems for such a purpose). And that's something I'm trying to work on.

Twey

Not to drag the thread too far off-topic, but I believe that to be very false. Debates are much better held in a forum or mailing list, where, when responding, one can go through the original post and separate it into points, answering each as one goes, without fear of losing track of an earlier point and without having to interrupt to respond immediately to a point (or fear being interrupted).

Knowing John, I doubt that was intended to be mocking at all.

I'm with you as far as opening up discussion on such things goes. I didn't mean to mock you, but feel free to take it that way if you like. I just wanted to know where you stood on the literal interpretation. It appears that you are at least open to discussion on it. I take that as a positive sign. Putting some of my cards on the table, I'm agnostic. That's a broad category. It simply means that I don't know for sure if there is a God or not, and believe that no rational person given the evidence available could see it any differently. This does not mean that I haven't had my share or more of religious experiences, or that I necessarily have or lack faith. I certainly respect anyone's right to believe as they see fit. But I do draw the line where that might put others at risk.

Twey, debate has a strong connotation of intensity or rigor. Although I enjoy that and my inclination is to convince people of my views, I think mutual understanding is the healthiest goal. If once they understand me they still don't agree, it's time for me to back off for now and let them think about it; it's no reason to ruin our relationship. And the relationship is what I find easier in a physical setting, especially while handling such core issues. So physical discussion is my ideal.

John, I'm sorry I took it that way, and I can understand that such a question is hard to ask without giving that impression.

jscheuer1

I meant to be provocative, not mocking. But you have to (I would imagine) admit that talking snakes are pretty weird.

I could go on, but you seem to indicate that you would rather not do so in a public forum.
