1) Script Title: Image Thumbnail Viewer

2) Script URL (on DD): http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex4/thumbnail.htm

3) Describe problem: White dots are appearing on the full-size photos, but not on the thumbnails. Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it? It is particularly noticeable on the dark areas of the last six photos: http://www.dwwebdesigns.com/sophie/shower.html

Thank you,
Deborah

Hmmm white dots how? Using FF2.x and IE7, the enlarged images look normal actually.

Here's a screenshot of what's happening to the majority of photos:

Hmm what browser are you using? Loading the exact same pic as the one in your screenshot, I don't see any white spots. I do see the white spots in your screenshot though.

I'm viewing on IE6, the same browsers the school will be using.

Ok, using IE6 to test out the enlarged images, I only see the white dots appearing in the image you referred to above. I can't see how the script would cause this though. Perhaps try reuploading that photo in binary mode again?

Hi,
I've already tried that to no avail (as well as changing the quaility of the photos, saving the photos as png, etc.)

After Googling the issue, it appears to have something to do with alpha filters and/or opacity in Internet Explorer: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=242612

In fact, if I remove this line of code from the javascript:

opacitystring: 'filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.alpha(opacity=10); -moz-opacity: 0.1; opacity: 0.1',

You don't get the fade in transition for the full-sized photo, but the white specs disappear: http://www.dwwebdesigns.com/sophie/shower2.html

Funky, huh?

Thanks for looking into this for me. One problem solved (or close enough) and one to go.

Did you get a chance to view my reply for my previous post about the fading message scroller? http://www.dynamicdrive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30777

Thanks again,
Deborah

I have the same problem with IE7

when i remove :

opacitystring: 'filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.alpha(opacity=10); -moz-opacity: 0.1; opacity: 0.1'

from the script, the problem disappear.

No problem for Firefox 2.0.0.13 or Safari, only IE :x

I've just encountered this problem on a new site I am building. No white dots on the original JPG but they appear when viewed in the Thumbnail Viewer - not all pics are affected and in my case they only seem to show up against a pure black object in the photo. As yet I am only viewing my site in IE6 so don't know if problem is apparent in other browsers.
Is the only solution to remove that opacity filter in the JS file as discussed above, or has anyone come up with a better answer?

Depending upon the script, there are sometimes javascript or style solutions. However, this is a known bug with IE and JPEG type images where filters are involved. See:

http://www.dynamicdrive.com/forums/showpost.php?p=100040&postcount=6

for information on adjusting the black level in your image to avoid this in any situation where IE applies a filter to a .jpg image.
