View Full Version : Redirect for handhelds to smaller page.

We design to 800 x 600. A few of our clients use the 640 x or 1024 x and many are now using handhelds. I'd like to detect the screen size or resolution for the sake of the handheld devices and deliver a different page. The page would be optimized for their screen size so that it did not scroll left and right.

Can you help?

Screen Size Redirect Script (http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex9/info3.htm)

From what you say, it should be just about perfect. If you need to add other resolutions than those covered, it is pretty straight forward but, if you need help, let us know.

One note though, designing a page to fit 800px to 1152px widths is not all that hard and will save you work in the long run. You will probably still want to detect smaller screens and serve up content tailored to them.

We design to 800 x 600.Then you aren't designing for the Web.

Unlike the print medium, the Web can't be considered a discrete set of canvas sizes. It is variable, ranging from the very small, all the way to the very large. If you aim for a particular viewport size, you're excluding everything else. You need to accept that the approach used for designing on paper cannot be applied - at least rigidly - when designing for a computer screen.

Read up on fluid design (http://www.allmyfaqs.com/faq.pl?AnySizeDesign). If you embrace that principle fully, your problems will all but disappear. If worst comes to worst, with a well-written document you can easily apply a handheld-specific style sheet using either a media at-rule, or the media attribute, without the need for multiple versions of the same pages.

I'd like to detect the screen size or resolutionYou really need to stop wanting that.
